Welcome to the USU Political Science Department
Old Main Room 320

The Political Science Department is pleased to announce that it will be holding a conference titled “Freedom and the Rule of Law,” September 15-16, 2008 at Utah State University. The keynote speaker for the conference will be Justice Antonin Scalia of the United States Supreme Court. Justice Scalia's lecture will be held Monday, September 15, 2008 from 12 - 1 p.m. in the Evan Stevenson Ballroom, Taggart Student Center, Utah State University. It is open to the public.

In addition to Justice Scalia's talk, ten lectures by nationally recognized political scientists and legal scholars will be delivered September 15-16, following Justice Scalia's talk. All of those lectures as well will be held in the Evan Stevenson Ballroom at USU and are also open to the public. A schedule for the lectures is listed below.

The relationship between freedom and the rule of law has been central to the development of American constitutionalism since ratification of the Constitution. The lecturers who will be delivering their talks following Justice Scalia's address touch on such important themes as the history of the rule of law, the relationship of presidential war powers to individual rights under the Constitution, the moral conditions of liberty, Progressivism and the rule of law, the Voting Rights Act, and theories of constitutional interpretation, including that of Justice Scalia. These talks will be given by some of the leading authorities in their field. Students and members of the public will have a chance to ask questions following the talks given by these individuals. We invite one and all to attend and participate.

W e are deeply saddened to bid farewell to one of our majors, David Mark Heiner, class of 2010, who passed away on June 18, 2008. David saw politics and government as a way to make the world better. In pursuit of this dream, David took every opportunity to serve at Utah State University. He was elected as a board member of the Political Science Honors Society, Pi Sigma Alpha, and he served on the Advisory Council for ASUSU where he organized many activities and campaigns for student government. He served as an undergraduate Teaching Fellow in the Department and was scheduled to be the new peer advisor for Political Science starting this fall. His ability to connect with students and convey enthusiasm for the subject matter made him an invaluable resource to us. David also helped in numerous ways around the Department, including the compilation and administration of the new website where he acted as blog master. He had big plans for the site this next year and we will miss his many contributions. David had planned an internship in Washington DC this coming year where we have no doubt he would have left an impression as large as the one he made on our Department.

In honor of David's memory, The Heiner family is establishing a scholarship in the Department of Political Science at Utah State University to support student internship activities.
